LOS ANGELES – Golden Eagles starter
Kyle Owsley pitched seven solid innings and whiffed six Dixie State batters en route to Cal State L.A.'s 5-2 win at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah. The Golden Eagles improve to 4-0-1 on the season.
The Rebels got on the board in the second inning with a solo shot. Dixie State would go on to score again in the bottom of the third giving them a 2-0 lead over the Golden Eagles. That would be the end of the Dixie State scoring as Owsley and his relievers,
John Mitchell and
Arturo Reyes, shut down the Rebel bats.
Matt Winkelman hit a sac fly to center to score
Adam Klein in the top of the fourth to put Cal State L.A. on the board.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the sixth, scoring three unearned runs as the Rebels committed three errors in the inning.
Jack Roche scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by the Dixie State centerfielder.
With two outs to go before the stretch,
Tommy Horning scored from third, the final run of the game.
Mitchell entered the game in relief for Owsley in the eighth and shut down the side, striking out two Rebel batters.
Arturo Reyes made his third appearance of the season in the ninth. He shut down the Rebels in their last attempt of the game and completed his third scoreless inning of the season. In three appearances, all coming in the Golden Eagles' last inning of defensive work, Reyes has shutout his opponents, but due to the score has yet to record a save.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Friday for two nine-inning games in St. George. In their early game, Cal State L.A. goes head to head with Mesa State, before seeing action against New Mexico Highlands in the afternoon. After that, the Golden Eagles will play one more game in Utah, a showdown with Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday.
